Fix Your Eyes

To walk in freedom from a sin that has dominated his life, a believer must turn his eyes away from himself and his struggle. For when he looks to himself, his battle will be in his own strength. He will make "laws" for himself to not do the sin anymore. But having put himself "under law," sin will take opportunity through his own commandment and produce in him every kind of impulse to continue in the sin (see Romans 7:7-8).

Instead, the believer must turn his eyes to the grace of God in Christ Jesus. Peter said, "Fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ" (I Peter 1:13 NAS). In other words, get a revelation of Jesus and you will experience His grace breaking forth in your life. And the power of His grace working in you will be greater than the power of sin in you.

Paul indicts us all in Romans 3:23, saying "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Yet a chapter and a half later, he proclaims that "we exult in the hope of the glory of God" (5:1 NAS). What changed?--the recognition that, having been justified by God, we have, "through our Lord Jesus Christ...obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand" (Romans 5:1-2 NAS).

"Those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ"(5:17 NAS). If one is a believer, the gift is already given and the grace is already being poured out, like a waterfall of the life and power of God washing down upon him. But the struggling believer must look away from himself in order to see it, to step into it by faith, and to let it do its work in him. By fixing his eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of his faith (Hebrews 12:2), he will lay hold of "this mystery...which is Christ in you, the hope of glory" (Colossians 1:27 NAS).
